Volunteering
COMMUNITY HEALTH CARE VOLUNTERRING
Background of the project:Â Volunteer in Ghana and support the community efforts to eradicate poor health conditions and poverty. Poverty causes poor health in that without proper resources, treatable diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and others contribute to disability and mortality within Ghana.
Given the limited resources it is difficult for the hardworking staff to provide basic health care for everyone in the area. This program is suitable for those conducting internships (public health) as well as students and professionals interested in public health in a developing nation.
Volunteers will be part of the public health team outreach & research projects which travels and conducts health talks to the students at district schools. All projects are designed, implemented and evaluated in cooperation with community members, local authorities and volunteers.
Goal: The main objective is to develop awareness and understanding of the fact that living conditions and view on health influences the development of health care within a society. And contribute towards the health care services in the hospital and the community
Â
Role of the intern: Possibilities for developing an international network and improvement of the capability of intercultural communication are important. Gaining knowledge about how the original culture may influence communication and interaction between health care providers and their clientele are also at the centre of learning. Knowledge and comprehension as in cultural self-awareness, deep cultural knowledge and sociolinguistic awareness are shown through the internship during which students need to be able to listen, observe, evaluate, analyze and interpret.
GHANA SPORTS VOLUNTEERING
Participation in sport is so important for the mental wellbeing and healthy development of any young person and you can make a real impact by being part of our sport volunteer programmes.
Introducing new ideas and different team and individual sports to communities that have not previously been exposed to them is an exciting and fun way to spend your time here with us. It’s not just about kicking a ball, our sport expeditions aim to establish the foundations for continued development of the sports you introduce or support. Establishing teams, organising leagues and regular training regimes whilst identifying local coaches giving them the tools to continue with the sport development long after you return, ensures your time has been useful.
Ghana Teaching Volunteering
In Buduburam refugee camp, a large percentage of children do not have access to education. Future Stars started as a jerry-rigged classroom, built under a tree. Since then, we have grown into a large non-profit. However, the heart of our organization is still our school. Future Stars currently runs a primary school in Buduburam with classes ranging from preschool through 9th grade. The school is made up of six classroom buildings and an office. Our classes run from 7:00am to 3:00pm. We have around twenty students in each grade and serve over a hundred and seventy children altogether. Once our children graduate, we do our best to find them financial sponsorship to allow them to continue in their education.
Primary school volunteers will get the opportunity to teach English, math, and science while also being involved in sports and crafts. Future Stars provides training for all of our volunteers and then allows them to shadow for the first couple of days until they are comfortable teaching. Afterward, volunteers will either assist with lessons or teach their own class.
A feeding program has been established in order to provide lunch every day; kids cannot learn on their empty stomach. Our goal is to aid, encourage, and inspire less privileged children to stay in school, and continue their education in order to lift themselves out of poverty.Â
Social Health Prevention Project Ghana
Poor health conditions and poverty is a vicious cycle seen in many developing countries. Poverty causes poor health in that without proper resources, treatable diseases such as diarrhoea, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and others contribute to disability and mortality within Ghana.
The Ghana Health Service, Ghana’s governmental health agency and authority for all public health facilities, identified the main areas of health in which Ghana needs improvement. These include rates of infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, polio, and others; non -communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and hypertension; and other health outcomes such as maternal and infant mortality, nutritional quality, and injury and death due to accidents.
- Problem statement:
Lack of value placed on health, nutrition and physical education in schools and communities.
In Ghana, 31% of school children lack access to safe drinking water, whilst 78% do not have access to good sanitation. This may contribute to poor hygiene behaviour among schoolchildren (UNICEF, 2003).
- Goal:
Assessing and addressing the unique health challenges of youth and people living in the communities. To focus on issues confronting these communities, building on their strengths, developing leadership skills and increasing their capacity to respond to rapidly evolving health problems.
- Role of the intern:
Volunteers/Interns will be involved in several projects, each of which aims to provide long-lasting impacts and emphasize prevention. These projects include education in schools and communities in Buduburam. You will be part of the public health team which travels and conducts health talks to the students at district schools and the people living in the community. The topics of these talks include symptoms, treatment, and prevention of malaria, HIV/AIDS, diarrhoea and more.
The project recognizes the power of the youth to lead change in their communities and aims to provide them with the knowledge necessary for action and empower them to work for change. Students are encouraged to not only learn the information, but to put it into practice, as well as to share the information with their families and community members.
